I have completely lost my voice. Here's why: Friday I snuck out of the office to catch a blistering 30 minute set from Forward, Russia! I missed probably 3 or 4 of their shows during the week so I had to make it. I'm really glad I did. Tom never fails to kill it. Saturday I woke up bright and early for Brooklyn Vegan's showcase at the Annex. Despite some early equipment issues, I had a really great time DJing between the bands. Big thanks to BV for having me on the bill. As for the bands, I enjoyed White Whale and Tokyo Police Club. Elvis Perkins really blew me away as well. He's on tour now. Catch him somewhere. After a quick dinner, I jetted over to the Modular Showcase at Midway and saw Van She play a short, tight set. Looking forward to hearing how their sound evolves now that their "Van She Tech" remixes are in such high demand. Here they are rocking out on Kelly: Fixed was out of control. Digitalism absolutely killed. They didn't just play the hits, they banged out a full hour long set. Amazing. Zdarlight Justice hit the decks shortly after the end of that video and the place was a sweaty, pogoing freakfest. I danced hard and hit the wall just after We are Your Friends. Great way to end the week. Thanks to JDH and Dave P for putting together another awesome party. It was nice to see a bunch of friends out at the club, kind of like being in Europe. People are dancing again...great things to come.

HUGE HUGE HUGE! Fixed 2 Year Anniversary at Studio B in G'point Digitalism (Live) Justice (DJ Set) Rory Phillips (DJ Set) Digitalism are the heavy hitters of the Kitsune stable. Even though they difine the sound of the Parisian label, Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci (I would pronounce that Two-feekie, thoughts?) are from Hamburg. They have produced some of the biggest bangers of the past two years in Idealistic and Zdarlight. Their new track Jupiter Room is a staple in my sets. This will be a crazy set. Digitalism - Idealistic As well as being Ed Banger's golden children, Justice are the Slayer of dance music. This is truly crunchy, headbanging, air guitar, slam dancing, blood drinking techno. You've heard We Are Your Friends at every party you've ever been at, but it takes some intestinal fortitude to withstand a full set from Gaspard and Xavier. Take a listen. Bring ear plugs and have a light meal before getting served a hot plate of Justice. Justice - Live at I Love Techno Rory Phillips is from London and is Erol Alkan's homeboy in the longrunning Trash club. Trash is widely credited for kick starting the rock and roll dance culture that we (me) love around these parts. Rory also is also instrumental in the Our Disco (go there for their podcast) parties. Diversity is his middle name. Daredevil is my middle name...

Swedish Evening | The Knife & The Sounds

I was about 20 minutes late for the early Knife show. That being said, I think saw everything I needed to see. As expected, the stage, visual, and sound setup was extremely elaborate. I've read elsewhere that Olof and Karin intend for the visuals to be focus number 1 of their show. They "perform" behind a scrim with visuals projected in front and behind them. I'm pretty sure Olof doesn't play anything live. I was close enough to observe that Karin is definitely singing. However, I'm not sure any of the amazing vocal manipulation that makes The Knife: The Knife was being affected in real time. Being focused on dance/electronic music here, I think its appropriate to add a bit on performing electronic music live. I take the point of view that a little playback can allow the performer to add more to their physical performance (a la The Presets). However, relying on it 100% is a bit offputting. Even the Holy Robots Kraftwerk stand behind computers and twiddle. Just lookin for a bit of an effort. I have to say Karin's vocals were the highlight of the show for me. The haunting, creepy androdgyny that sounds so cool and cold on the album doesn't lose any of its chill live. All in all, if you take it on its face, The Knife succeeded in putting on a fantastic musical art performance. ______________ After a bit of a beer break, we cruised down to Chinatown for the Club NME party that was to feature CSS, the Horrors, and Crystal Castles. We downed some Microsoft Zune sponsored free beers at a very cool Chinese banquet hall and were about to cruise. Then the Sounds came on. Surprise surprise. "Part of the Weekend Never Dies" The Bang Gang are a motley crew from Sydney, Australia. Jamie Doom, Ajax, DJ Damage, Gus Da Hoodrat, Dangerous Dan, and Double Nolan are living the dream circa 1988 Madchester. Nothing is serious about these guys except their music. Spend some time on their elaborate site to get the drift. Largely (self) credited with accelerating the popularity of the electro scene in Sydney and presenting the world with the next wave of Australian bands. They've been host to the Bang Gang rave on Friday nights for the most beautiful people in Sydney. They've championed/remixed Van She, the Presets, The Valentinos, Riot in Belgium, the Presets, New Young Pony Club, and F'ing Daft Punk. They are planning to self-release their musical output via the Bang Gang 12" label. Pronounced "Bang Gang 12 inches," these guys are completely phallus obsessed. I can't imagine its been cleared, but the first release will be Nicky VanShe Vs Dangerous Dan's remix of Around the World. I tried to spray paint the DFA lightning bolt on my Adicolor Hightops (to no avail) and I have lightning bolt medallions for my gold crunk chains. I love LCD Soundsystem. Its not blind love, so when I heard about Jimbo teaming up with Nike I was somewhat skeptical. You see, Nike's got this series of sponsored "sport music." The idea being that you can rock the tracks while you workout, I suppose. LCD Soundsystem was commissioned to be the 2nd contributor in the illustrious series of 2. The first honor was bestowed upon those guys with their collective fingers on the pulse of electronic music circa 1997: The Crystal Method. Now, we all know that LCD is not adverse to corporate sponsorship, reference the Playstation 2 Tour of 2005. Furthermore, James and the band are evidently avid runners while on tour. A+B = 45:33. The marriage was inevitable. Please rise for a reading from the holy gospel, "In testing (sic, no shit), I found that 'hard, fast, propulsive' music was NOT the best running music for me," quoth Lord Murphy. I don't run, but when I used to go to Crunch, they mandated workout/running music as Tiesto remixes of Kylie Minogue...on repeat. beats on repeat. I digress... LCD Soundsystem - 45:33: Nike+ Original Run is far from what you would consider "normal workout music:" its more of series of movements in some futuristic space disco opera. From the opening piano riff, through the stomping disco horn solo, back to the twinkling electronic warm-down, it is a full low-high-low ride on the disco big rig. This ride is definitely best enjoyed with headphones on, either running for your life like a hamster on a wheel, or sitting on your ass in your cube while making Excel your bitch. BUY IT NOW. Well worth it. In this digital day and age, paying the bills is paying the bills. Luckily, Nike has the forethought to allow artists to be artists. The rumor is that DFA gets the rights back in a few months and we can look forward to a 2007 full of Booka Shade & M.A.N.D.Y. remixes of the cuts off of 45:33 (thanks to Nike: Patron Saint of Space Disco). I'm going to spend most of this week gearing up for next weeks CMJ Music Marathon of Death! Alright, its not actually called "...of Death", but its timing is very spooky this year. If you didn't already know these two creepshows are going down on Halloween night: Motherfucker w/a band that is really terrible and HOT CHIP at 1:30 am The Rapture & the Presets play a smaller show at Bowery Ballroom (Tickets are still available for their show on Monday night at Webster Hall) POW! Pick of the Week: Trentemøller Thursday at Cielo Outside of M.A.N.D.Y., Trentemøller was probably the biggest new dance artist to break on to the scene in 2005. He's mainly known for his peaktime electrobangin' remixes. However, Anders spreads his wings on his shockingly refreshing new album The Last Resort. Its been out for awhile now on Steve Bug's Poker Flat label. I apolgize for sitting on this one but I wanted to hold out until he came to town.

This album is at the top of my list. I really can't recommend it enough. It is a very forward thinking electronic album. Lyrically, there are few missteps, but the music is really diverse and the production is top notch. Buy the album from Other Music or Itunes. You won't be disappointed.

I can't tell you how excited I am for the TTC show tomorrow night at the Knitting Factory. TTC is a French hip-hop crew made up of rappers Teki Latex, Tido Berman, et Cuizinier (aka Cuizey-Cuiz), as well as their DJ, DJ Orgasmic. They are the real deal. I don't speak a lick of French but their flow is unbelievably smooth and sweet god, the production is amazing. Much of their Bâtards Sensibles album was produced by his holiness Para One and Institubes main man Tacteel. Their crisp, mashed up hip-hop, techno beats are as forward thinking as you can get. The logical musical evolution of a bunch of city kids who grew up on Daft Punk and Biggy Smalls. Lil' Cuizey just released his street tape Pour Les Filles Volume 2. Its white hot. Pick it up at the show tomorrow night or via Arcade Mode. disco-not-disco has some hot TTC tracks from the Album as well as a few from openers Beans & Cadence Weapon. His original compositions have drawn comparisons to Notwist, Postal Service, and Beck. I'd like to think of him more as a musical futurist; melding all that is awesome from hip-hop, rock, and dance into an amazingly catchy, dancable sexy soup. He is most certainly pushing the boundaries of modern indie music. Huge trend alert...Rollerskating in your video is the new dancing on a treadmill. Two pieces of evidence: 1. Walter Meego's new video for Romantic & 2. the Rapture's video for Get Myself Into It. The latter has a reference to a mainstream blonde songbird who also has a rollerskating video in current MTV rotation... The Rapture will be at the Soho Apple store next Tuesday (9/12) to play a few jams off of their new album Pieces of the People We Love. It starts at 8pm, get there early if you want to catch them. The album is fantastic. Sunshine replaces gloom, but the beats are there and sexy. "I used to think the world was a bitter pill, but now I know its a grand ole' time..." Crashin' In Presents: The Presets, Goat Explosion (formerly known as Elkland), Holy Hail, Djs: Oil(Kanine Records) and Eamon (Calling All Kids) @ Galapagos Doors are at 10 so I'm guessing it will be a late one...if you can't do that on a Tuesday, I know they are playing at 6 pm tonight at Virgin Megastore too. I'll look into this more, but MSTRKRFT seem to be playing at Don Hill's on Friday night. I think it might be a live show to debut their new album The Looks...but it may be just a DJ gig.

The Bookeaters benefit was a good time on Wednesday. I donated $20, but didn't get a hug. The music was fantastic and a welcome surprise, but J.Stewart killed it. Lots of reviews, pics, comments, concerns elsewhere. Now its the penultimate weekend of summer motherfuckers. Friday South Street Seaport has a good lineup tonight. Will it rain? Ted Leo & the Pharmies Tokyo Police Club 6 PM I really want to see TPC, I've been digging their EP. If you like Tapes 'n, Arcade, Wolf P, Sunset Rubdown, etc...you'll probably like this: Tokyo Police Club - If It Works My buddy Mr. Blair DJs the sex tech beats at the very cool (and Swedish) Good World bar on the LES tonight from 10 pm. Walter Meego is what happens when you grow up listening to Daft Punk but your parents are paying for guitar lessons, not turntables. You know that's totally up my alley. They absolutely killed it on Friday night at Pianos. I think they won over a few fans as well...Acid basslines and killer hooks, from really nice guys. If only the show were at 1 AM instead of 9:30 PM... NYC needs to see these guys more often. Hopefully, we'll make that happen in October. Saturday was probably the nicest weather that NYC has seen in 2 years. We trekked out to McCarran Pool with 4 liters of John Daniels and Coke. We rolled into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Sonic Youth show and only got 1 confiscated. Plus, the powers that be fixed the beer situation. We got lit. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked as the sun set, drawing heavily from their first EP and their first LP. I haven't heard them play Rich in like 2 years. Awesome. Sonic Youth killed as well, I've never seen them before. I hope to catch them again in the near future. After dinner at Mamoun's on St. Mark's, we rolled over to the Modular NYC monthly party. Super Meego opened up, Holy Hail played live, and Dave P and JDH rocked the party until 4:30. Fantastic music all night long. Next month (Sept 19th) Modular brings the neo-rave Klaxon's over for their 1st NYC appearance! Expect lots of whistles and sirens.

I know the weekend has begun when I listen to Annie Mac live on the BBC. Great music from, what seems to be, a nice girl. Friday Day of Meego Saturday Sonic Youth & the Yeah Yeah Yeah's play McCarran Pool. FYI, the beer line is fuckall, either come drunk or don't plan on drinking. PS1's Warm Up is pretty rad again this week as another day/evening option. Rub-n-Tug turn things out and Escort plays shimmery disco LIVE. Crazy, right? If you want to stay in/go to Queens. The Water Taxi beach throwdown "Rebound" has Metro Area from 8 pm and what looks to be sand... Modular's NY outpost office puts together their monthy hoe-down back in Manhattan at Midway (formerly Scenic). It reads like a Fixed party...Totally kooky Holy Hail plays live, JDH & Dave P play cocaine sex jams, and SUPER MEEGO livens things up early. I'll be pogo'ing around the place. Typically, Wednesday mornings are very rough for me. Not sure why, but I can never wake up. I threw my Ipod on random this morning, which I never do, and this new track came up. Whitest Boy Alive - Burning Instantly, I recognized Erlend Øye's haunting, but fragile voice. It woke me right up. I investigated a bit further and found that Whitest Boy Alive was originally an "electronic" side project for Øye. As you can hear, its no longer electronic. Looks like lots of tickets available on the ol' Craigs. Tim Sweeney's NightTime party is back at Don Hill's with a live set from the Long Blondes from the UK! Saturday I haven't been yet this summer, but PS1's Warm Up parties are the best parties in NYC. Van She are from Australia, just like Cut Copy, the Presets, and Wolfmother. They are also on Modular Records, just like Cut Copy, the Presets, and Wolfmother. Modular is rapidly becoming my number 1 stunna. I heard Van She's track "Kelly" on Chris Coco's Blue Room show last Sunday, which if you haven't had a listen: do it. I think its the best radio programme (nod to the Brits) in the world. I'll save the commentary for other blogs. They rock in a sick Neo-New Order meets Air kinda way. Good music for Transcontinental flights and dark corners of Tokyo. Kelly is a fantastic song. Try and find their EP in a shop near you, its worth the import price. To give you some skills checks, I'm including their remix of the Klaxons' "Gravity's Rainbow". Lifechanging. Its really hot out. While I can't endorse going outside at all this weekend, there are some cool things going on. Tomorrow at PS1 Todd Terje spaces it out for the ravers. If you want to really dehydrate yourself, go stand outside all day with 10,000 other hipsters at the Village Voice Siren Festival. I think I'll opt for dancing around in my underwear in the Air Conditioning to PARA ONE. Para One is brilliant. You know I'm obsessed with the French label Kitsune, but this Parisian nugget just takes it to a new level. This dude is totally from the future, he knows things that we don't know. I'd like to thank everyone who came out to the first big Slap You blowout on Saturday night...I think everyone had a great time. The boys of Walter Meego had fun, even though Justin had to sleep on my floor. His back is probably aligned quite nicely now...They'll be back August 11th for their LIVE debut at Pianos. Mr. Blair had fun. He was a true champ. I think he singlehandedly rewired the sound in the 2nd floor and endured sauna level temperatures. He posted his set over at MFR. HUGE thanks to a great DJ and nice dude! Hopefully he can join us for #2... Pictures, recaps, and rumors overheard at the party to follow.
